HERA ‘BESTROM’ PROJECT – GRADE 7
£33,518 - £38,833 pa
You will support Professor Eve Rosenhaft on the two-year project Markets and Fairs in the Making of Europe’s Economic Multiculture. The project is one of four component case studies in Beyond Stereotypes: Cultural Exchanges and the Romani Contribution to European Public Spaces (BESTROM), an international collaborative project funded by the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) scheme. It will examine patterns of cultural exchange between Romani and non-Romani actors at horse fairs in England and Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, juxtaposing local cases from two national contexts whose experience has differed radically since the 1930s in consequence of the Nazi genocide. It involves fieldwork in archives and libraries in the UK and Germany, and may also include an oral history element.

Key responsibilities of the role will be:
- assembling visual and textual source material from UK and German archives and libraries, and, where feasible, oral history research
- analysis and interpretation of source materials
- writing up the results of research for both collaborative and single-authored publications
- participation in the international workshops and meetings organised by BESTROM (4 over the course of the two-year project)
- supporting and contributing as appropriate to BESTROM’s public engagement activities
You will have doctoral level experience in research involving some combination of Romani studies, history, anthropology and German studies.

You should have a PhD in History, Anthropology, German Studies, or another discipline relevant to the project and to Romani Studies more generally and a high level of competence in both English and German.
The post is available until 31 May 2021.
